Discover a World of Spice

We just love how a sprinkle of good, fresh spices can take food from ho-hum to hey now! Especially when said spices are internationally-inspired blends from our friends at Whole Spice in Napa.

We first met Ronit and Shuli, the owners of Whole Spice, at Oxbow Public Market in Napa, where they enchanted us with their know-how and their range of gorgeous, fragrant spices, all freshly ground in-house.

All of the Whole Spice products are exceptional, but lately it's the more exotic spices that are tickling our fancy. Vadouvan Powder, Shichimi Togarashi and Crushed Aleppo Chili are so much fun to cook with that they've become pantry staples. Keep some on hand for whenever you feel the urge to spice things up, international style.

Vadouvan Powder

A French take on Indian curry powder

Tangy, aromatic curry leaves and a medley of classic Indian spices get a French twist and a hint of earthy sweetness from shallots, onion and garlic.

Mild, delicate vadouvan plays particularly well with rich ingredients (like cream sauce or anything sautéed in butter). We're jazzed about Vadouvan Mac & Cheese and these lamb chops.

Shichimi Togarashi

Japanese Seven Spice

This popular Japanese condiment excites the taste buds with a harmony of flavors: hot Korean chili, cayenne and ginger, toasty sesame seeds, umami-rich roasted seaweed, sweet brown sugar, Japanese sea salt and aromatic orange peel.

Spicy Shichimi Togarashi works magic on rich foods. Try some on Glazed Pork Ribs or French fries.

Crushed Aleppo Chili

Like a cross between cumin & cayenne

Made with sun-dried Aleppo peppers, this moderately spicy powder has tart, fruity flavor with subtle earthiness.

Named for the Syrian city of Aleppo, these red chiles are popular in Middle Eastern cooking. Add some to chicken kebabs or tomato-based simmer sauces. Or sprinkle away over pizza, potatoes or deviled eggs.
