Puglian-Style Iced Coffee with Almond Milk (Caffe Leccese)

Caffe Leccese, iced coffee with sweetened almond milk, originated in the Lecce region of Puglia. While coffee shops in Italy today have different variations, the formula is simple: ice, espresso, and sweetened almond syrup or sweetened almond milk. For our version, we first make almond milk from Sicilian marzipan, as Italian-style almond milk can be harder to come by in the United States.

For the almond milk

.5 ounces Organic Sicilian Marzipan

1/2 cup cold water

Instructions

For the almond milk (makes 1/2 cup):

In a blender, place the marzipan and the water and turn the blender on to low at first, increasing the speed slowly until the marzipan is completely dissolved. Use any leftover milk for more Caffe Lecesse or drink it straight over ice.

For the Caffe Lecesse:

Pour espresso into a glass. Pour in your almond milk. Stir to combine. Top with ice.
