About PrimoGrano by Rustichella d'Abruzzo
Rustichella d'Abruzzo's PrimoGrano pasta line (primo grano means “first grain" in Italian) was born out of third generation pasta maker Gianluigi Peduzzi and his sister Stefania's desire to bring back the taste and authenticity of the pasta that their grandfather made when the company first started in 1924.
In search of this traditional Abruzzese wheat, Gianluigi and Stefania sponsored a detailed study by the Institute for Experimental Grain Research and found three high-protein heirloom wheat varieties—Carlo, Varano and Mongibello—tracing back to original clones grown in the Vestini hills of Abruzzo.
Every November, Gianluigi and a team of 14 farmers plant these three heirloom wheat varieties on 148 acres of land in the hills surrounding Pianella (Rustichella d'Abruzzo's home). They harvest the wheat the following summer and grind it at their state-of-the-art mill into soft, aromatic semolina, which combined with mountain spring water to make their PrimoGrano pasta.
They have now expanded the PrimoGrano line to include Intosso extra virgin olive oil (made with 100% Intosso, an olive varietal native to Abruzzo) and locally-loved Pera d'Abruzzo tomatoes.
About Rustichella d'Abruzzo
In 1924, Gaetano Sergiacomo started making rustic pasta using the whole wheat flour produced at his family’s stone mill in the small town of Penne in Abruzzo. In 1981, his daughter, Nicolina Peduzzi, decided to revive the pastificio, (pasta factory) naming the new product line Rustichella d’Abruzzo. Soon after, Nicolina’s adult children Gianluigi and Stefania joined the family business, and within a few years, the small pastificio had grown into one of the most extensive artisanal pasta lines in Italy. Today, Rustichella d’Abruzzo offers a diverse selection of pasta, pasta sauce, holiday goods and more.
