Baked Sicilian Apples

Marchesi di San Giuliano has a wonderfully simple recipe for baked apples that we think would make a perfect Thanksgiving dessert-alternative.

Ingredients

  • 4 Golden Delicious Apples, peeled and cored
  • juice of a lemon
  • 1 teaspoon cinammon
  • 4 tablespoons cold butter, cut into 1 tablespoon chunks
  • 7 tablespoons Mandarin Marmalade

Instructions

In a small bowl, whisk together the lemon juice, 3 tablespoons of the marmalade and 2 tablespoons of hot water. Arrange the apples in a baking dish and pour this mixture over top, ensuring even coverage.

In another small bowl, mash the butter and cinammon together into a paste. Spoon one tablespoon each of butter and marmalade into each apple. Place in a 350 degree oven and bake for 20 minutes.

Allow to cool a few minutes before serving. These are incredible with vanilla ice cream or a dollop of crème fraîche.

As seen in the December 2009 Food and Wine.

The eastern coast of Sicily is home to some of the Mediterranean's most fertile lands - the warm summers and cool winters make this land ideal for citrus growing and that's precisely what the Marchesi Castello di San Giuliano and his family have been doing for 800 years.

In the late 1980's, the family noticed that some of the fertilizers that had become commonplace were producing a fruit that lacked the color and flavor to which they'd become accustomed - and so they returned to organic farming methods. Now all of their fruit is grown this way once again and the quality of their jams is unmistakable.

Available in Red Grapefruit, Blood Orange and Tangeli (a hybrid of mandarin orange and yellow grapefruit), these three flavors represent the bounty and uniqueness of Sicilian citrus. The best and simplest way to enjoy them is on toast with a smear of sweet butter. The richness of butter and the bittersweet tang of marmalade is a tried and true combination.

  1. San Giuliano Mandarin Marmalade

    Posted by Momof2 on 11th Mar 2010

This marmalade is one of the few I will eat. It is full of fruit flavor and isn't bitter at all. It also has a thick consistency. Definitely worth the cost.
